Innovative developments

One of the Sustainable Development Goals approved by the United Nations in 2015 is ‘Building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and fostering innovation’, which is fully consistent with the development of Ukraine’s modern construction materials industry.

As part of the implementation of the tasks of the New Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035 and the National Waste Management Plan until 2030 NTU ‘KhPI’ participates in the implementation of the latest developments that provide for the modernisation of the industrial sector of the economy in the direction of energy efficiency, competitiveness and maximum utilisation of technogenic resources. The project 2021.01/0316 ‘Development of composite materials for road construction based on multi-tonnage waste’ commissioned by the National Research Foundation of Ukraine is aimed at solving these problems. This project is aimed at solving the problems of creating building materials, in particular paving slabs, with high performance properties, with the maximum possible use of waste from various industries to improve the environmental and economic situation in the industrial regions of Ukraine.

The construction materials developed by the project authors based on multi-tonne waste from the metallurgical and energy industries outperform traditional materials in terms of performance and have a number of special properties, such as durable colour and increased abrasion resistance, which significantly increase their competitiveness in the Ukrainian construction materials market. The combination of the required material characteristics and the lower price compared to traditional materials is what makes them superior to their analogues.

The key to the successful implementation of research on this project is a team of experienced scientists from the Departments of Ceramics, Refractories, Glass and Enamels, General and Inorganic Chemistry, and Research and Development, led by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Sakhnenko M. D. Joint research is carried out in the laboratory of special binders and composite, structural materials and refractories (headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, full member of the Academy of Construction of Ukraine Shabanova G. M.) and the Scientific and Technological and Educational Centre of NTU ‘KhPI’ (headed by Candidate of Technical Sciences Ryschenko O. S.).
