19 January 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yuriy Ignatievich Pogorelov, an outstanding organiser of science who dedicated his life to the development of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. His contribution to the establishment of the research activities of the institute remains significant today.
Yuriy Ignatievich started his career at the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute in 1946 as a student of the Faculty of Power Engineering. During the post-war restoration of the institute, he not only studied but also actively participated in the reconstruction of the destroyed buildings. After graduating in 1951, he remained at the institute, rising from a postgraduate student to the First Deputy Vice-Rector for Research.
In 1962, Yuriy Ignatievich became the head of the Institute’s research department, making significant efforts to develop scientific research. During his tenure, the volume of scientific research increased significantly, and the results of scientific developments were implemented in the national economy, bringing significant economic benefits.
From 1979 to 1997, Yuriy Ignatievich was First Deputy Vice-Rector for Research. He was the initiator and leader of important research projects that contributed to the improvement of management structures and efficiency of industrial enterprises.
Along with his administrative activities, Yuriy Ignatievich was actively involved in science, having more than 20 scientific publications. He was an organiser of science and promoted the implementation of scientific developments carried out by scientists and engineers working at departments, laboratories, institutes and design bureaus.
Today, on the centenary of Yuriy Ignatievich’s birth, the research department remembers and appreciates his achievements. His life is an example of boundless devotion to science, university and country. Eternal honour and gratitude to the outstanding organiser of science, who forever left his mark on the history of NTU ‘KhPI’.
